Nigeria Decides: Governor Amaechi fails to vote

Rivers State Governor and Director General of the Buhari/Osinbanjo Campaign Organisation Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi could not exercise his franchise early today at his ward 8, unit 14, Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state due to unavailability of INEC results sheets.

The governor had at about 10:05 a.m Saturday arrived Ubima for accreditation but was reliably informed by the polling clerk of ward 8,unit 14 that there were no result sheets at the polling unit to collate the data of total votes cast after voting, a development which discouraged the governor from participating in the INEC accreditation and voting exercise.

A statement signed by the governor’s spokesman Mr. David Iyofor said, governor Amaechi could not participate in the accreditation and voting exercise because of unavailability of INEC result sheets in the polling unit.

The statement further said, the risk of participating in the INEC accreditation without the result sheets would pave way for election riggers to have a field day in the manipulation of the election results.

The APC members in the area had before the governor’s arrival refused to be accredited by the polling clerk due to lack of result sheets. They protested when the governor arrived. The governor also learnt that the INEC result sheets were not available in all wards of Ikwerre local government area and most polling units in the state.

Election Will Continue Tomorrow – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been monitoring field reports on the accreditation process since the commencement of the poll this morning. Whereas the process has gone on well in several places, in some others it has encountered some challenges, especially with the use of the card readers. Consequently, accreditation has been slow in many places and has not commenced at all in some others.

Even though the Guidelines for the Conduct of the 2015 general elections provide that where card readers fail to work and cannot be replaced, elections in such Polling Units will be postponed to the following day, the scale of the challenge we have observed today has necessitated a reconsideration of this provision of the Guidelines. The Commission has, therefore, decided as part of the Guidelines for the Conduct of the 2015 general elections that in Polling Units where card readers have so failed to work, the Presiding Officer shall manually accredit voters by marking the register of voters, upon being satisfied that the person presenting a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) is the legitimate holder of the card.

The above not withstanding, in Polling Units where accreditation was suspended to the following day in accordance with the existing Guidelines, arrangements will be made for voters to vote tomorrow, subject to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

The Commission reassures the voting public that it will thoroughly investigate what happened, while it remains committed to the delivery of free, fair and credible elections in spite of the challenges.

Liberia's first Ebola patient in over a month dies: official

Monrovia (AFP) - A Liberian woman who last week became the country's first Ebola patient in more than a month has died, a senior official said Saturday, adding that two new suspected cases had been identified.

The woman, who was diagnosed with Ebola on March 20, is the wife of a cured patient. The case was a setback to hopes that Liberia, once the worst-hit country, would be free of the epidemic soon.

"The last Ebola case died yesterday. She did not make it," Francis Karteh, the head of Ebola Incident Management Team in Liberia told AFP.

"Beside that, we have no confirmed case now in the country. Only two suspected cases for now. We are surveying 80 persons who were in the vicinity of the lady who died," he said.

Liberia has recorded more than 4,300 Ebola deaths but was at an advanced stage of recovery, expecting to be declared Ebola-free by mid-April before the latest case in the capital Monrovia.

Since the outbreak began in December 2013, more than 24,000 people in nine countries have been infected with the virus, and over 10,000 of them have died.

All but a handful of those deaths have occurred in Liberia and its neighbours, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

But the tide seemed to have turned in Liberia, which six months ago was reporting more than 300 new cases a week.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced earlier this month that no new case of the deadly virus had been registered in Liberia since February 19.

Ndani TV Host, Onos O Stars in Mafaa- A Visual Story by QD Salami

NDANI TV HOST "ONOS O" STARS IN "MAAFA - A VISUAL STORY BY QD SALAMI

Maafa [A Swahili Word] is used to describe the history and ongoing effects of atrocities inflicted on African people including other forms of physical and mental oppression, sometimes self-inflicted, to the present day.
Budding photographer, QD Salami says he was inspired by the recent social media uproar on the issues of modern day depiction of slaveryand colourism. "As much asthe African holocaust is treated as a continuous history, worthy of an ongoing discourse, In my opinion, which is utterly subjective, we as Africans in general need to let go of some of the horrible past." He says.
"Granted, it wasn’t the best of times and we have overcome it to a large extent, but we truly need to let go of the metal shackles left. As said by Assata Shakur “To Become Truly Free, One Has To Be Acutely Aware Of Being Enslaved” ". This here is QD Salami's little interpretation of Maafa, which ironically also means “Keep Pulling At It” in Yoruba language.

How To Get Rid Of Fever Blisters

What is fever blisters?

Fever blisters are painful sores, which most people associate with an intending illness, they appear mostly on the lips but can also be found on the cheeks, chin, fingers and nostrils. These are caused by a virus. Fever blisters are contagious  Several cures are available for soothing and healing fever blisters. Before going for any medication, you can also use the ingredients from your kitchen counter to get rid of the fever blisters.

Some Causes of Fever Blisters Include;

There are several things that may cause a fever blister with the most common believed to be ‘an intending illness’. Other causes of fever blisters may include;

Kissing, hugging or being in close contact with a person that is having fever blisters
Through indirect contact, like sharing a towel/handkerchief or lip balm  of the infected person
Virus can easily spread through cuts or bruises on the skin
Cosmetic surgery
Lip injury
Dental treatment
Stress
Hormonal changes
Basic Symptoms may Include;

Symptoms of fever blisters are very easy to detect and they are  as the name implies; small, red blisters filled with fluid, fever, pain and irritation, itchiness, headache, swollen lips and swelling of lymph nodes. Generally it is the blister at the corner of the lip mostly the lower lip that gives it away.

Tips on Managing Fever Blisters

The causative virus is highly contagious, so avoid kissing or other mouth-to-body activities at any time during an outbreak. Also avoid sharing utensils, cups, or straws with other people, and clean your plates and utensils thoroughly with disinfectant soap. Gently washing the blisters with soap and water may also help to prevent the spread of the outbreak. Make sure you wash your hands frequently, and try to avoid touching the sore. If you touch the cold sore, you can then spread it to other people or to other places on your own body.

Treat the accompany fever

As the name implies, there is an accompanying feverish feeling and since this is a viral infection there is no direct cure. You need to manage the fever. Take fever relieving drugs such as acetaminophen (panadol, paracetamol), ibuprofen or any analgesic you can lay your hands on and is hygenic for you. Have a cold shower, take cold tea and monitor your temperature from time to time.

Seek Medical help

If your fever lasts for more than a week, please go seek medical help. Your immune system might be compromised or you might have an impending outbreak.

Try and be patient

If left untreated, a cold sore can last from eight to 10 days. Until then, there’s not much you can do. Avoid squeezing or picking at a sore, as this will only slow healing. So hands off and discipline yourself appropriately.

Put ice on it

Ice cubes work jointly to create an environment inhospitable to the virus that causes the blister, as well as to reduce pain that it may be causing. Use an ice pack, rather than touching ice directly to the blister, and keep moving the ice around. Do not ice for more than 10-15 minutes at a time.

Eat more amino acid, lysine

It is believed that a primary protein in the virus that causes fever blisters can be combated with a protein found in dairy products – lysine. Eat cheese, yogurt, and milk daily and look for lysine supplements at your local health food store. Ask the local pharmacist or dietician for help and get the required lysine dose.

Apply some milk

Dab the blister with a cotton ball of milk. The proteins in the milk helps heal the sore and the cold nature of the milk soothes the sore. You can do this several times  daily.

Cover up with petroleum jelly

You can cover the sore up with petroleum jelly as this will soothe the pain as well as prevent the spread of the virus. it will also prevent secondary bacterial infections that might worsen the the sore.

Other Tips Include;

You can also apply cider Vinegar

You can clean the sore with hydrogen peroxide to heal and prevent spread.

You can also apply garlic juice to increase the rate of healing

You can also apply pure aloe vera paste or topical ointments

Nigeria Decides: How Nigerians may vote

After months of preparation, vigorous campaign by political parties and their candidates, postponement in scheduled dates, accusations and counter-accusations, the 2015 presidential election is here, and in less than 24 hours, Nigerians will be heading to the polls to choose who among the 14 presidential candidates who have secured the tickets of their parties as the next president of the most populous black nation on earth!

Saturday’s presidential election is arguably the most important in the history of Nigeria as a nation and one that will go down in record as the most fiercely fought. It is the most important because it is the first presidential election after the nation celebrated its first 100 years of nationhood. It is the most important because Nigerians are going to the polls to elect a new leader in a time of war, the war against Boko Haram insurgents. It is the most important, because Nigerians have never at any point been this politically aware and passionate about elections as it is been witnessed at the moment.

The 2015 presidential election holding tomorrow, as pointed out, will also be the nation’s most fiercely contested and one that may not produce an overwhelming victory for any of the candidates. Students of history are quick to point out the fact that at no point in the history of Nigerian elections has a ruling party or an incumbent been given the kind of fight and scare as is being experienced at the moment in an election year. Since the return to constitutional democracy in 1999, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has always had a field day, going into national elections with so much comfort and confidence, a situation that made a leader of the party to once boast that the PDP will rule Nigeria for the next 60 years.

As their slogan implies, the coming on board of the All Progressives Congress, APC, into the nation’s political firmament after a successful merger of the legacy parties, has proven to be a game changer in Saturday’s election. The party, through the combination of deft political maneuvers, extreme and productive use of the media and propaganda, has been able to work itself into the consciousness of Nigerians, many of whom see the party and its presidential candidate as the change they have been waiting for.

The current discontent in the land and the clamour for change, notwithstanding, Saturday’s election will surely be a photo finish contest between the two main contenders, incumbent President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and a former Military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari.

President Jonathan, a former Vice President to late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, is coming into Saturday’s contest with Nigeria’s famed incumbency factor, the ruling party’s national spread and hitherto behemoth structure across the length and breadth of the country, the gale of endorsements coming his way and adoptions by some other opposition parties. For General Buhari, the widespread discontent and clamour for change in the land seems to be his most potent weapon in Saturday’s election. Coupled with this, is the expected block votes from the Northern and Southwestern states which his party, the APC, has as strongholds.

Though Saturday’s presidential election may be predictable on regional basis, it is however instructive to look at how Nigerians may vote in the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, as block votes may not necessarily come in handy in some geo-political zones.

President Jonathan Arrives His Hometown Otuoke Amid Tight Security

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has arrived Otuegbe, Ogbia Local Government area in Bayelsa State today friday.
The president will cast his vote at a polling unit near his country home.

Prior to his arrival, two Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) were seen on the Otuoke Road, one in front of the president’s house.

The other was parked in front of Magels Resort, a hotel close to UBA, the only bank in Otuoke.
Earlier, a helicopter was seen hovering around the town, apparently on security surveillance.
Soldiers and policemen were also seen on the main road, as well as plain-clothes officers who guarded the president’s house.

Michael Irene: What really is it? Democracy? Nigerian Democracy? Cabalocracy?

John Dunn, Emeritus Professor of Political theory at King’s College, London, posits: “democracy is not synonymous with good governance.” In other words, the fancy use of the term “democracy” simply doesn’t birth the practice of accountability and fairness in democratic nations. In his seminal book, Breaking Democracy’s Spell (2014), Dunn argues, in clear terms, why this oft praised system of government is replete with “unstable, vulnerable […] and continuing danger” in the so-called democratic countries.
The general failure to “comprehend” the concept of democracy, he states, amplifies deep “instability” in governance. His assessment holds certain truths; democracy thrives on, most times, racial/tribal divisions, malicious capitalism and widens the gap between the haves and the have-nots. Yet, many third world countries exercise this borrowed system of government without proper analysis, and often times, espouse the monstrous characteristics of democracy.
This is not to suggest that democracy is not laden with its advantages but the system as used in most African nations, for instance, in a country like Nigeria, shows that the system is used to defraud and oppress the hoi polloi.

Okoye in an essay, “Election Administration in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: A Guide for Election Managers and Students” claims that “history of elections in Nigeria shows that it has been characterized by massive frauds, the intimidation and even assassination of political opponents.” These characteristics enumerated by Okoye have its historical precedence.
In 1959, the last Governor-General before Nigeria gained independence, Sir James Robertson, orchestrated a stunning electoral process, which, according to Akintola, a Nigerian historian, was created to “thwart Nigeria’s progress and undermine the authority of the new [political] elites”. That is, the newly elected Governor-General and later president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, and the Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, were both set-up to govern a nation characterized by various cultural differences. The politicians were tools in the hands of the colonialists. Nothing worked.

Deyan, another scholar of Nigerian literature and history, argues that the newly imposed independence gifted to Nigeria by colonialists set the country “into a cycle of pathos.” Arguably, the historical pathos still haunts Nigeria in contemporary times. The leaders have not learnt from history. They’ve not been able to move away from the colonial trap.
Of course, total democratization of nation states takes time and works with consistent dialogue, positive practical approach and implementation of policies. Are Nigerians, however, having these dialogues? Are Nigerians asking the right questions about democracy as practiced in their country? International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) proposes that for democracy to work accurately in Nigeria, democracy must include a broad section of the society, embody the aspirations of all Nigerians, and it must fight against the culture of the elites’ attachment to power. IDEA’s proposition sounds good but it is what it is, an idea, which the political elites are not willing to put into consideration.

Four Super Eagles players dropped ahead of South Africa friendly

Media Officer of the Super Eagles, Toyin Ibitoye, has revealed that four players have been dropped ahead of Sunday’s friendly match against South Africa.

The decision to drop the players, means Daniel Amokachi will be travelling with a 23-man squad, as Nigeria attempt to redeem their image against the Bafana Bafana.

“I believe four players will be dropped so that we will be going with a reduced number than those we have in camp presently,” Ibitoye told Goal.

“The Eagles have vowed to stage a comeback against their hosts on Sunday as they are still bitter about the home loss to Uganda”, he added.

Enyimba forward Mfon Udoh, Chidiebere Eze (Ifenayi Ubah FC), Onyekachi Okoye (Abia Warriors) and Ubong Moses (Kano Pillars) are the four players that will not make the trip

US Stations Its Marines In Ghana In The Event Of Post Election Crisis In Nigeria

Looks like the United States wants to ensure that the peace Nigeria has continues even as the country will be going to the polls to vote for a Presidential candidate come tomorrow 28th March, 2015.

While we can vividly remember that the U.S Secretary of State, John Kerry was in Nigeria a few weeks ago and he got to speak with the major opponents, Jonathan and Buhari on encouraging a peaceful, free and fair election.

President Barrack Obama in a video released earlier this week also shows him urging Nigerians to be peaceful and shun violence.
According to The Nation, two Hercules C-130 transport planes landed at the Kotoka Airport last week, bearing “at least three helicopters”.

“There are well over 200 marines,” the source, who pleaded not to be named because of what he described as the sensitivity of the matter, said.
“They are camped at the airport,” he added.

The helicopters are belived to be meant for the quick evacuation of Americans in Nigeria - in the event of violence.
It was not immediately clear yesterday where the marines and equipment may have been moved from. The United States has military bases in Europe.

The source also said two United States Navy ships had been sighted off the coast of Takoradi, Ghana.
A Ghana Defence source said one of the ships is equipped with medical facilities.

“More marines are expected,” he said, also pleading not to be named because, according to him, he is not allowed to talk to the media.
“It is not unusual for the United States or any other country to do this because they have to protect their people,” the source said.

Man cuts open giant snake's belly & you won't believe what he saw inside

This man and his friends discovered a giant snake with hugely swollen stomach in the bushes and decided to cut the belly open to see what was inside the snake. What they saw left them shocked. It was another giant reptile. The snake's last meal had actually been another huge snake, both nearly identical in size. The man pulled the second snake out of the body of the first one and laid them both on the ground next to each other. See the photos:

Peter Okoye: Marriage has made me to be more responsible, but

Singer Peter Okoye admits marriage has changed him as a person in an interview with Vanguard. Peter however added that marriage has not changed him as a P-Square.

"Marriage has made me to be more responsible, in the sense that there are certain things which I am limited to do as a married man," he said. but added that he still remains who he was before marriage "I still remain who I am because marriage doesn’t restrict me from doing what I know how to do best on stage, " he added.
