Gov. Rotimi Amaechi Imposes Dusk-To-Dawn Curfew On Port-Harcourt

The Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared dusk-to-dawn curfew on Port Harcourt, the state capital, hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission announced the result of the presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.
In a terse statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, George Feyi, the governor said the curfew will hold from 7p.m. to 6a.m.

“The curfew will continue till further notice,” a part of the statement said.
The declaration of the curfew comes amidst heightened tension occasioned by the conduct of last Saturday’s election in the state.
Mr. Amaechi and the All Progressives Congress had boycotted the polls over the failure of INEC to supply result sheets to many polling units especially in the party strongholds.

I can only play for Liverpool in England – Suarez

Luis Suarez has hinted that he could return to Liverpool one day, insisting that he will never play for another Premier League club.
The Uruguayan left Anfield for Barcelona last summer in a reported €102 million deal, but was back at his old stomping ground on Sunday, to feature in a charity match between Steven Gerrard XI and Jamie Carragher XI.

After the game, Liverpool’s official website asked Suarez if he would ever play for the Merseyside club again.

He replied: “You never know in football, but if in the future, I play in England again, I play with the Liverpool shirt on and not another shirt.”
Suarez made 133 appearances for Liverpool and scored 82 goals. Speaking on his return to Anfield on Sunday, he said: “It was great for me.
“Four years ago when I arrived here for Liverpool, I crossed my fingers to play with Fernando and he left three days after I signed.

ECOWAS Declares Nigeria’s Presidential Election Acceptable & Well Conducted

The ECOWAS Observer Mission (EOM) has declared that Saturday’s Presidential election is acceptable and meet the criteria of being free and transparent. The declaration was made by the mission’s head and former President of Ghana, John Kuffour, in Abuja on Sunday.

Kuffour expressed satisfaction with the commitment made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, security agencies and various entities on the electoral process.
He observed that the turnout of voters was generally high with a laudable participation of women and young people who displayed commendable level of patience and discipline.
“Security agents were present at most of the polling stations and on patrols in and around the cities as peaceful atmosphere prevailed in most parts of the country,” he said. The mission also noted that INEC officials demonstrated good knowledge and compliance with voting procedures.

Three INEC Staff Killed In Benue During Election

Three adhoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Benue State were reported to have died, in the course of election duties in the state. The Resident Commissioner of INEC in the state, Prof. Istfanus Dafwang, made this known yesterday while briefing reporters at the state headquarters of INEC in Makurdi.

Prof. Dafwang said the commission also recorded the destruction of its materials at an unnamed location in Guma local government area of the state. He said amongst the dead was a female ad-hoc staff who died on Saturday morning in an accident at Oju local government area, while on her way to her duty post.

“She was being taken by a motorcycle rider to her unit and he was probably over-speeding when the front of the bike apparently pulled off leading to the gahstly accident that claimed her life.

“The other two died Sunday morning in an accident on their way back to Makurdi from Vandeikya where they took part in the conduct of the elections,” he said.

Prof. Dafwang, who acknowledged that the exercise went on peacefully across the state, however, called for prayers to ensure that the coming governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections went without hitches.
At the time of this report, collation of results were still ongoing at Makurdi INEC office.
